Conference Workshop: “An Introduction to the Role of Race, Class and Gender Issues On Campus Sustainability Work”

October 16, 2017 @ 9:15 am - 10:15 am

Dr. Heather Hackman will be presenting a pre-conference institute, a post-conference workshop, a concurrent workshop and a poster session at the 2017 Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education Conference & Expo.

Workshop Description:

This introductory session explores the powerfully important ways that dynamics of race, class and gender (RCG) impact the efficacy of our campus sustainability work, and then suggests how a racial justice, economic justice, and gender justice framework can substantially deepen that very same work. The session begins with a brief framing of the connection between RCG issues and sustainability, followed by the outlining of a social justice lens that can be used address them. The session utilizes reflective writing, paired discussion and small group conversation to foster participant engagement and is best suited for those with very little understanding of social justice issues.
